Black history is an integral and unique part of the growth of Annapolis. The following quote is from MetroTravelGuide.com: "Despite its beginnings in the slave trade, Annapolis has become a favored destination for African American tourists. Before the Civil War, Maryland had more than forty percent free African-American citizens, more than any other state. In the 1890s, one of Frederick Douglass' sons founded Highland Beach, a resort for the earliest elite African-American families. On the waterfront, at Ego Alley, a memorial to Kunta Kinte commemorates ancestors who passed through here." You will find our diversity adds excitement and energy to our Annapolitan lifestyle.
